A lot of stocks and sectors are trading near their January high and this ...

By: Martin Wolf

Ever since the federal republic was founded, Germany has had two over-riding strategic objectives: sound money and European integration. These were the twin imperatives learned from the calamities of the early 20th century. The euro embodies these aims. Now they conflict with each other. Is the right answer to rescue sinners, thereby strengthening the cohesion of the eurozone, but threatening monetary stability? Or is it to let sinners default, thereby strengthening ...

March 4 (Bloomberg) -- The European Central Bank may have to decide just how much it’s prepared to allow Greece to dictate monetary policy for the euro region as a whole.

As Greece’s struggle to cut its budget deficit keeps the euro close to a 10-month low, ECB officials will today debate whether to slow the withdrawal of emergency measures used to fight the global financial slump. March 2 (Bloomberg) -- Australia’s central bank resumed raising interest rates after a one-meeting pause, judging that faster-than-anticipated economic growth will allay concerns that European deficits may roil global confidence.

Reserve Bank of Australia Governor Glenn Stevens increased the benchmark overnight cash rate target to 4 percent from 3.75 percent in Sydney today, as forecast by 14 of 19 economists in a Bloomberg News survey. The rest saw no change. Stevens said ...

By Ron Harui and Paul Dobson

March 2 (Bloomberg) -- The pound dropped for a sixth day versus the dollar amid concern U.K. citizens will struggle to elect a government strong enough to reduce the country’s debt.

The U.K. currency weakened against all 16 of its most- active counterparts after polls showed Britain may have its first minority administration since 1974. The U.S. dollar rose for a second day against the yen after Philadelphia Federal Reserve Bank President Charles Plosser told ...

The Morality Thread

I have decided that is high time that AC start a thread highlighting all the immoral happenings in the financial industry. It is such a terrible thing to see so many professionals and fund managers get corrupted and loose discipline and focus. Part of great success is having a strong moral foundation that will not be questioned. And as a young growing fund AC would like to remind itself and other financial professionals to be a true themselves and guard against moral hazard.

2010-Year of the Paper Tiger-The Sturdy 30

As this will be the "original" Shadow's last missive, I must leave you with one thought: linear thinking does not work, certainly not in our exponential world.

So as I keep hearing managers tell me that 2010 is "their year," I become somewhat concerned. Your year? What will savvy investors tell their $3 billion "investment committee safe" manager?

March 1 (Bloomberg) -- While the eyes of the world focus on Greece’s debt crisis, investors in Edinburgh are busy preparing for the U.K. to be next.

Turcan Connell, which caters to rich families, expects the pound to lose between 20 percent and 30 percent against the dollar once investors turn their sights on Britain as the government sells a record amount of debt. Concern that Greece won’t be able to cut its budget deficit helped send the euro 5 percent lower against ...

By Bloomberg News

March 1 (Bloomberg) -- China’s manufacturing grew at a slower pace in February, reducing the risk of overheating in the fastest-growing major economy.

A Purchasing Managers’ Index released by the government today slid to a one-year low. Another PMI, from HSBC Holdings Plc and Markit Economics, showed the weakest expansion in three months. A weeklong Chinese holiday last month may have affected the numbers.

Investors are concerned that China’s economy may lose momentum, ...
